Site Details
A large, tidal bay on the west Kerry coastline, Carrahane Strand has rapidly built itself a reputation as one of the prime sites for finding and observing Nearctic shorebirds in Ireland. Although other species such as Pectoral, Baird's, White-rumped and Semipalmated Sandpipers are near-annual, it is one of the most reliable sites for seeing Buff-breasted Sandpiper in the Western Palearctic — birds are seen (in varying numbers) each September. It can also be good for gulls, with Yellow-legged Gull regular here in autumn. To observe the greatest variety and number of waders, a visit in conjunction with the rising tide is necessary.

Directions
From the R551 in the centre of Ardfert, take the minor road west. Take the first righthand turn west of the village and follow this road west until the bay opens up on the left. After parking sensibly anywhere along the minor road which hugs the northeastern side of the bay, the adjacent saltmarsh and machair can easily be explored on foot.Site Photographs
