Site Details

Being one of the westernmost points in Kerry (and Ireland), the potential of Valentia Island as a site for rare and unusual migrants in spring and autumn must be huge — the island must surely attract the occasional Nearctic passerine. Despite past observer coverage being scant at best, Greenish and Barred Warblers demonstrate that birds may also arrive from the east. Coverage is at its densest at Knightstown, in the east of the island, and gradually thins out as one ventures westwards. Concentrating on the typical myriad of west Irish gardens, fields and stone walls is likely to bring the best results.

Directions

The island is easily reached via the R565 roadbridge at Portmagee (V372732), although the Valentia Island ferry runs between Knightstown and nearby Reenard Point, on the mainland.
