Site Details

The east-west-oriented valley of the River Etherow on the Manchester side of the Pennines, followed by a disused railway (now a walking/cycle route, the Trans-Pennine Trail) and the A628 Woodhead Pass main road. Mainly gritstone moorland (mostly managed for grouse) and upland reservoir habitat, with some rough grazing and mixed woodland. See also individual reservoirs (from west to east/bottom to top: Arnfield, Bottoms, Valehouse, Rhodeswood, Torside, Woodhead) and entries for Woodhead and Crowden.
