Site Details
Moorland, rough pasture, upland reservoirs and limited areas of mixed woodland at upper end of Longdendale. Visit early on summer weekends to avoid most of the dogwalkers, picnickers and Trans-Pennine Trail users.

Various stopping-off points on A628 Woodhead Pass.Access
Most areas can be viewed from the Trans-Pennine Trail bridleway and adjoining footpaths; generally open access elsewhere, except lower pastures and reservoir surrounds and occasionally in grouse-shooting season.Parking
Large pull-off (with refreshments van) in disused quarry at SE111000&ar=y; parking for several cars also available near Woodhead Tunnel portal SK114999&ar=y.Opening Times

Etherow valley and Birchen Bank wood for Ring Ouzel, Grey Wagtail, Stonechat, Dipper, etc. The section of the Trans-Pennine Trail north of the A628 (between the tunnel entrance and Salter's Brook Bridge) is good for Golden Plover, Snipe, Curlew, etc. Surrounding moorland holds Peregrine, Raven, Red Grouse and Golden Plover. Short-eared Owl are seen occasionally over the moors to the east (but less often recently). Introduced Mountain Hares are common on the moorland slopes towards Bleaklow.Site Photographs
