Site Details
Glapwell Colliery, a restored former colliery spoil heap, is owned by Derbyshire County Council. It is a young site with common farmland birds, open grassland and young broad-leaved plantations. The Doe Lea runs through the site, recently diverted from under the Glapwell landfill site. Stockley Pond, adjacent to Common Wood (a Sycamore plantation), is an old colliery reservoir which is not brilliant for birds but worth a look for dragonflies. Sometimes Kingfishers can be seen on the reserve. In spring the wet areas are worth a look for Little Ringed Plover and Green Sandpiper. The fields are worth a scan in winter for the white-winged gulls using the tip.
