Slavonian Grebe by Ivan Quail
The unusual angle that Ivan Quail has achieved on this Slavonian Grebe in a Northern Irish harbour makes for an eye-catching Photo of the Week winner. Looking down on the bird, which is returning a stare directly at the camera with that piercing red eye, creates a real intimacy between photographer and subject. A pin-sharp image offers fantastic detail in the bird's head and bill, while the soft light conditions and slightly backlit subject only complement the photo further. In a week which saw some fantastic uploads to the BirdGuides gallery, including yet more terrific shots of Waxwings and Short-eared Owls, Ivan's shot still manages to stand out from the crowd. Well done, Ivan!
