Greenshank by Donald Hutchins

Although one of the more familiar migrant waders in Britain, Greenshank is never an easy bird to photograph. This species is notoriously skittish and rarely allows for a close approach, with many field encounters involving noisy birds flushing and flying away from the photographer. However, as this lovely image by Donald Hutchins shows, exceptions are sometimes possible – especially when, as in the case of this photo from Slimbridge WWT, Gloucestershire, a hide can be utilised to get close to these shy shorebirds.

Donald's photo depicts a breeding-plumaged adult Greenshank in all its summer finery, with the black speckling on the underparts and that beautifully intricate underwing pattern both on show. In addition, he's caught the bird in a great pose, making this a worthy POTW winner. Well done to Donald!
