The anomalous Magpie Goose is a living fossil, having apparently diverged from the Anhimidae (screamers) and Anatidae (ducks, geese and swans) early in evolutionary history. The sole living member of the family is restricted to New Guinea and Australia, but fossils from the extinct genus Anatalavis have been found in Europe and North America.
