Bar tailed or black tailed? Juvenile black tailed godwits can be a nightmare for the inexperienced. This juvenile black tailed godwit has a patterned back and one must remember that juveniles tend to have shorter beaks (same rule applies especially to curlews). An easier way ro remember is bar tailed juveniles have more of a patterning and colouring simular to a curlew. The bar tailed adults have a thinner and darker beak and aldo has a darker curlew style back. The paler chest on this picture is also inconsistent to bar tailed.
