Key Areas / Routes
Bird feeders and area surrounding the Visitors' Centre is a certainty for Tree Sparrows. Occasional winter visitors to the feeders include Siskins, Willow Tits and (occasionally) Brambling. The Mere holds phenomenal numbers of ducks in winter, including Goosander, Pochard, Teal, Gadwall. In late summer the grassland around it is good for Yellow Wagtail, and the Mere is a good site to see Kingfisher, especially in August. Most years Garganey are seen here on passage, and Black Terns pass through in May.
Wath Ings has long been famous for its waders at times of passage (although recently management decisions leading to higher water levels have reduced the numbers). Green Woodpeckers can often be seen in the distant trees beyond the Ings from the Wath Ings Hide. In winter Bitterns are sometimes seen from this Hide, but more often from the new reedbad hides.
In winter thousands of Golden Plover and Lapwing can be seen around the site.
