Redwing by Toby Houlton

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow ... and it looks like it did just about everywhere (only for one night here in Liverpool though), with the so-called 'Beast from the East' causing havoc across most of the country.

It had to be a snowy winner this week in celebration and my favourite shot was this Redwing by Toby Houlton. This is a perfectly exposed image, taken at a low level in lovely light conditions. In this side-on portrait, the Redwing has been captured in a beautiful pose with wings down, tail raised, head slightly cocked and with a highlight in the eye. It's hard to imagine a better-looking shot than this.

Congratulations to Toby on his wintry winning image, taken with a 500mm lens, at 1/2000 th second, f5.6 on ISO400. With milder weather already here and spring hopefully now on its way, it'll be interesting to see what the coming weeks hold.
