In addition to having one of the highest levels of biodiversity on the globe, Peru ranks second worldwide for its 1,891 different species of birds.
Peru's large number of birds is in part due to its geographic location that makes it home to a vast array of birds inhabiting its 84 – out of a total 117 – recognized life zones.

Endemism in Peru
The number of bird species in Peru has increased dramatically. In the past 20 years, there have been almost 100 new additions. As a result of such growth, 117 species are now considered endemic to Peru.
Many of the newly discovered endemic species in Peru are dull in colour, but they all point to many more astounding discoveries yet to be made.

The marvellous hummingbirds
This family of tiny masters of the air has been with us since ancient times, as they are one of the sacred animals in the Andean world, and carriers of a message of wisdom that encourages us to change course if we need it.
Peru is home of 127 species of hummingbirds, a third of all those known, including 15 endemics found only in Peru.
Feeders, hides, and specialized gardens have been conditioned in different areas to propitiate encounters. San Martín and Amazonas regions in north-eastern Peru are two such sites, together with the Sacred Valley in Cusco and the renowned Manu Protected Area, among others.
