Comprising most diurnal birds of prey, but excluding falcons, Accipitriformes typically have hooked bills and fairly broad wings. They have strong legs and feet with sharp claws and an opposable hind claw. Almost all Accipitriformes are carnivorous, hunting by sight during the day or at twilight. Some, notably the vultures, tend to be scavengers rather than active hunters. Most members of the order are in the family Accipitridae (buzzards, eagles, harriers, hawks, kites and Old World vultures) but Osprey and Secretarybird occupy their own respective families. Authorities differ as to whether New World vultures (Cathartidae) fall within the Accipitriformes.
