The toucan barbets (known by some authorities as the prong-billed barbets) have recently been split from the New World barbets (Capitonidae). There are only two species in the family, both in the genus Semnornis: Toucan Barbet (S. ramphastinus) and Prong-billed Barbet (S. frantzii). They are fairly large, squat-billed barbets, found in similar humid, montane forest habitats in Ecuador/Colombia and Costa Rica/Panama respectively.
