There is only one genus (Pluvianus) and one species, Egyptian Plover (Pluvianus aegyptius), in this family. A striking wader with black-and-white head, back and flight feathers, Egyptian Plover is resident in sub-Saharan Africa. It is sometimes known as the "crocodile bird" for its supposed habit of flying into crocodiles' mouths to pick food from between their teeth. This behaviour has never been photographed and is disputed by most modern ornithologists.
