Site Details

A rugged and hilly island roughly four miles long by one mile wide situated about three hundred yards from the mainland and accessed by Ireland's only cable car. The vegetation is mainly heather and low gorse on the hills with some grassy fields on the southern side. There is little cover except for some gardens and some low trees in a gully beside the stream.

Directions

This is the most western part of Co. Cork. After going through Castletownbere drive west following the signs for Dursey Island.

Access

Access by cable car.

Parking

Adequate parking on the mainland.

Facilities

No facilities on the island except drinking water and one cottage available for rent.

Key Areas / Routes

The tip of Dursey Island is good for seawatching and the gardens are worth checking for migrants. Dursey is good for cetaceans also, the main species being Minke Whale, Common and Risso's Dolphin and Harbour Porpoise; Otters seen occasionally.
