Found in a garden shed. A. Maitland Emmet, in his ‘The Scientific Names of the British Lepidoptera’ suggested that ‘it seems like a sick joke to suggest that [German entomologist (1835-1900)] Hofmann had any feeling other than aversion for H. pseudospretella’ and the story that Hofmannophila was a joke at Hofmann’s expense is included in Peter Marren’s ‘Emperors, Admirals and Chimney Sweepers’, but I have not found and authoritative confirmation that it was indeed a joke, verging on an insult. The moth may be rather dull, but its back-swept labial palps provide a touch of swagger.
