Kevin Scott's shot of the Isle of Man's first-ever Desert Wheatear takes top spot in the January 2002 Photo of the Month competition. Although the photo is a worthy winner in its own right technically, and scores well on rarity value, Kevin gained bonus points for getting it to us very quickly after the bird's discovery - one of the strengths of the Internet is surely its facility for rapid broadcasting of information and images. Kevin has chosen a copy of our DVD-ROM Guide to All the Birds of Europe as his prize. The bird is very confiding,
approaching to within 10ft. This is the first record of this species on the Isle of Man.
