Staying on the Isle of May for a week gives a good insight into the disturbance to breeding created by visitors who have to walk through the breeding colony to get on to the island.Mistakenly thinking that humans are a threat the Artic Terns take to the air to attack the invaders. The gulls have got wise and use the opportunity to use the diversion to grab a chick. I'm sure the problem is similar in other locations too. Day visitors might not see the problem when they are too busy trying to take photographs but I soon found that the best shots are taken from outside the nesting area, terns bringing in food, squabbling with each other or trying to see off a true predator like this Herring Gull are more rewarding than those attacking humans !
