Although the rump is pale this is quite normal for Lesser Redpolls, as are the pale tram-lines on the mantle; however, these tend to be less striking white than on Mealy. It should also be noted that the rump on Lessers is not as contrasting and broad as on Mealy, but there is quite a bit of variation! Perhaps we are only identiying the most 'obvious' birds and many more subtle birds in 'Redpoll' flocks escape labelling?
