Loons (known as divers in Britain and Ireland) are large aquatic birds. They superficially resemble ducks or geese, and have webbed feet like those species, but they have spear-like bills and are exclusively carnivorous, feeding mainly on fish. They nest near freshwater habitats, typically in northern latitudes, but are frequently seen on the sea outside the breeding period. Their summer plumages are generally a smart combination of black, white and grey; in winter they are duller and more difficult to distinguish.
