Site Details

The spit at Rossbeigh is the most westerly on the south side of Castlemaine Harbour, acting as a natural breakwater which allows the estuary to exist. The spit, some six kilometres long, is characterized by a sandy beach and dune system. Waders and gulls may be found on the beach, with large numbers of Common Scoter wintering just offshore — it was here that the first Stejneger's Scoter for Ireland was found in March 2011, and Surf Scoters have also been seen.

A car park at the southern end of the spit (V644909) offers is a suitable base for much of the area to be explored. The spit itself can only be accessed on foot.
