Site Details

Estuarine meanders, brackish water, with a lagoon behind a shingle beach. Grazed chalk downland and wildflower meadows. Owned by National Trust, part of the South Downs Conservancy. More favoured for wild flowers and butterflies than birds (including Burnt Tip Orchid).

Directions

Visitor Centre is just past Exceat Bridge on the A29 Brighton to Eastbourne road. Buses 710, 711, 712 and 713 between Brighton and Eastbourne serve the site, at least one every 30 minutes.

Access

No restrictions, although some of the site may be fenced to prevent intrusion on important flower meadows at certain times. Please keep dogs under control when in sheep fields.

Parking

2 free car parks available at the Visitor Centre, with further free parking at the Golden Galleon pub.

Facilities

Very well served by South Downs wardens at the Visitor Centre (open between 10am and 4pm at least). Farmhouse Restaurant and pub nearby.

Key Areas / Routes

Fields north of the A29 have held good waders. The meanders at the top of the park also have waders. Winter Wildfowl visit Chingford Farm on the pub side of the Cuckmere River in good numbers.
