The 28 or so species of nuthatch are all members of the same genus, Sitta. They have short legs and wings but robust dagger-shaped bills and strong feet. Most, including the familiar Eurasian Nuthatch (S europaea), have bluish upperparts and a black eyestripe or mask. They forage along tree branches for insects (including vertical trunks), though they also feed on nuts and seeds, which they sometimes wedge into crevices in bark and hammer at with their bills. Most are sedentary but the Red-breasted Nuthatch of North America (S canadensis) is migratory and has occurred as a rare vagrant in the Western Palearctic. The family is represented right around the Northern Hemisphere from North America to the Far East.
