Oystercatchers are medium-sized waders with sturdy orange or red bills used for feeding on molluscs. They are mostly black or black and white, with red or orange bill and legs. There are 12 species ranging worldwide apart from polar regions and a few areas in the tropics. The familiar Eurasian Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) of Europe is the lightest of the family, and is unusual in sometimes nesting inland; oystercatchers are predominantly coastal breeders.
