This family contains only one species, Stitchbird (Notiomystis cincta). It is a small honeyeater-like bird, the male with a black and white head, yellow breast band and mainly grey body feathers; females are duller. It feeds mainly on nectar. After European colonisation of New Zealand it was reduced to a relict population on Little Barrier Island off North Island, but has now been reintroduced to the mainland.
