Faily-bluebirds are medium-sized, oriole-like birds of south-east Asia. There are just two species, both in genus Irena: Asian Fairy-bluebird (I puella) and Philippine Fairy-bluebird (I cyanogastra). Males of both species are mainly black with bright blue feathers on their head, wings, rump and tail; females are duller. They feed mainly on fruit (particularly figs) and inhabit open forest and thorny scrublands.
