The park sits on what used to be Greenwich Marsh, the land was brought by English Partnerships in 1997 and a massive regeneration project took place including restoration of parts of the banks on the river Thames and the creation of the Ecology Park as a freshwater habitat.The site is managed by the Trust for Urban Ecology (TRUE).The park is situated along the Thames path, 1000m east of the 'Dome' next to the Greenwich Yacht Club. The Park it self is made up of a inner and outer lakes, reedbeds, willow scrub, Alder Carr with a maze of small streams running through them, shingle beach and a small wildflower meadow.Tern rafts, nest boxes, a bat tower and a kingfisher tunnel have all been put in place as have other features to encourage wildlife.To the south of the park are several open fields which are earmaked for housing developments and to the north the river Thames runs east to west. The lakes and streams provide habitats for Frogs, Toads and Newts, many Dragonflies and Damselflies can be seen in the summer.As for birds at least 2 pairs of Skylarks have been in residents for the last 2 years in the fields to the south of the park, up to 50 Meadow Pipits winter in the area as did a Water Rail and 3 Chiffchaffs. This spring have seen the first Common Terns, Reed Warblers and Whitethroats breeding in the park.Some rarer birds seen lately have been Red Kite and Osprey flying over. The Thames is always capable of producing somthing rarer.
