Site Details
About 37 acres (15 ha) of old gravel pits with two big freshwater lakes with islands and a variety of surrounding habitats. Sand and gravel were extracted here until 1974, when the land was left to itself and it now has a very varied wildlife. Two big freshwater lakes occupy the deepest parts of the pits and shallows have been created to attract waders. Around the lakes is a bumpy terrain with various soils. Trees have been planted but there are now some fairly well established areas with Bee, Pyramidal and Common Spotted orchids to be seen on the steep banks to the north of the larger lake.

Directions
The reserve is at the east end of the Vale of Pickering, close to the village of Seamer on the outskirts of Scarborough. Scarborough’s new industrial estate runs along its east side while the A64 (Seamer by-pass) and the Scarborough-Filey railway line lie immediately to the west.Parking
There is parking off the roundabout on the A64, opposite Morrisons supermarket and the industrial estate.Facilities
