Site Details

Amble was an important port associated with fishing and the Southeast Northumberland Coalfield. A few fishing cobbles still operate, but the harbour is now largely patronised by pleasure craft owners. The old staithes have recently been renovated and with footpaths clearly marked birdwatching the various habitats is easy. The Coquet Estuary is regarded as important for wintering birds as the Tweed and the Blyth. 1 mile off-shore lies Coquet Island, a scheduled SSSI managed by the RSPB. The low-lying nature of the Island and density of breeding birds means that no visitors are allowed. Breeding birds include Eider, Puffin and Terns including a small colony of Roseate Tern.
