The Cotswold Water Park covers some 8600 hectares (33 sq. miles) part in Wiltshire and part in Gloucestershire. It includes some 130 lakes covering over 1,000 hectares of the Upper Thames Valley. The Water Park is of national nature conservation importance for wintering and breeding wetland birds. Ten of the lakes are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) because of the assemblages of aquatic plants that thrive in the clear lime-rich waters. High-quality water also means the area supports huge numbers of dragonflies. Within the Water Park there are several limestone rivers and streams (Swill Brook, Churn, Ampney Brook, Coln and Leach) running into the River Thames. Between the gravel workings there are a number of unimproved wildflower meadows of which eight are designated SSSIs.
