Site Details

Bembridge/Brading Marshes lie on the floodplain of the River Yar between Brading and Bembridge Harbour. An embankment across the harbour and drainage schemes and sluice gates have reclaimed the land south of the harbour. The flat low-lying land has reedbeds, pools and scrub. Centurions Copse lies at the southern end. The land has just been acquired by the RSPB and will be the first reserve the society has on the Island. Presently can be viewed from the old railway line joined at Brading or from Carpenters Road, St. Helens.

Directions

From Brading: turn into Quay Lane by the Wax Works (or church). Park at end of lane; take FP north along old railway line. From St. Helens: take Carpenters Road (B3330); after passing the green look for a lane on the left, to Sunlight Laundry. This lane leads to the old railway line.

Access

The RSPB reserve has no access as yet, but can be viewed from several footpaths, and the old railway track from Brading to Bembridge. The marsh can also be viewed from St. Helens Bridge over the River Yar on the embankment to Bembridge. Brading Marsh also has footpath access near Brading Station.

Parking

Limited parking is available at either starting point, but will be easier near the laundry.

Facilities

Site is accessible to wheelchairs at the laundry end. Some useful birdwatching can be done from a car if needed.

Key Areas / Routes

Where Laundry Lane meets the old railtrack, good views can be had over the marsh and woods. Further on there is a footpath on the right leading to Brading, another good view-point.
