Site Details
Hauxley is at the northern end of Druridge Bay, 1.5 miles south of Amble. Formerly part of the Northeastern Coalfield, the area has been 'reconstituted' and a freshwater pool established. This is now the Hauxley Nature Reserve, managed by the Northumberland Wildlife Trust. Since 1983 the Trust have developed this 80-acre site creating islands, embankments, pathways and hides. Extensive planting has been carried out and the site is maturing well. The former fishing village of Low Hauxley has sand dunes to the north and south and a foreshore of rocky carrs, shingle and sandy beach. The mature wood behind the village is private but shelter belts, shrubs and trees throughout have potential for migrants. Offshore is Coquet Island an RSPB Reserve. Due to the density of the breeding colonies there is no public access. The Island has a small breeding colony of Roseate Terns. Species are typical of the Druridge Bay area and during late May to August the terns from Coquet Island regularly bathe on the Reserve.

Directions
High and Low Hauxley are clearly signposted to the east of the A1068 1 mile south of Amble. After the bend in High Hauxley village the sign for the Reserve is on the right. The road continues to Low Hauxley.Access
Nature Reserve: Non-members are welcome and day passes may be puchased at the Centre. £1.50, .75p OAP, £2.50 Family parties. Low Hauxley: the wood behind the village is private but can be viewed from the 5-bar gate (marked private) in the village. The caravan site is also private property.Parking
a. there is ample parking at the Reserve. b. there is a public car park at Low Hauxley 1/4 mile to the north of the village - free. There is no parking in Low Hauxley village.Facilities
At the Visitors Centre there is ample parking and toilets including a toilet for the disabled. In the Centre there are interpretative displays about the area together with a noticeboard of recent sightings. There are 5 Hides: a. Top Hide - close to the Centre and with access for the disabled. b. Wader Hide - 5 minutes to the west. c. Eric's Hide - a small hide to the south of Wader Hide. d. Tern Hide - 10 minutes to the east. c. Ponteland Hide - closed to the public.Key Areas / Routes
