Site Details

The RSPB's only urban reserve, located at the junction of M5 and M6 in a huge bend of the River Tame. Habitats include: lake, river, marsh, reedbed, willow scrub, meadow, old hedgerow, wildlife garden and two dipping-pools; new scrape excavated and now in use (Lapwings bred in 2003 and 2004 and juvenile Grey Herons use it as a loafing area).

Directions

Car: access from M6 J7; A34 south. Right at first lights - A4041 Newton Road. After 3/4 mile turn left Hamstead Road (B4167) take Tanhouse Ave on the right; reserve on left. Bus: No. 16 from Birmingham city centre. Rail: Hamstead, on Birmingham-Walsall line.

Access

Reserve paths open at all times. No permit required. Reserve car park 09:00-17:00 closed Mondays. All paths within reserve are wheelchair-accessible with assistance.

Parking

Car park at RSPB Visitor Centre off Tanhouse Ave; open 09:00-17:00; no charge. (Note: car parks close at dusk during the winter months.)

Opening Times

Visitor Centre open 09:00-17:00. Closed Mondays. 10:00 - 17:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Facilities

Excellent, refurbished visitor centre; RSPB telescopes overlook marsh; four lake/marsh screens; and Lakeside hide is open most days when a volunteer is available. If you are travelling especially to see the hide please telephone the centre on the number below to check opening times, log-book; bird 'info' boards; 'hands-on' displays; hot and cold drinks; small shop; fully accessible toilet facilities.

Key Areas / Routes

Circular path from Visitor Centre covers all the habitats (map available). It is possible to extend a visit to take in the rest of the broad Sandwell Valley habitats-mixed woodland, pools (with a heronry), farmland, rough grassland/scrub. Directions available from RSPB Centre.
