Site Details

6 miles southwest of Nottingham. Flooded gravel pits, willow scrub and woodland. Owned by Cemex and managed by Notts Wildlife Trust. Covering about 150ha, the reserve consists of a series of flooded gravel pits as well as areas of scrub and trees with willow, hawthorn and alder. The pits are of various ages, and attract different species. There are additional gravel pits to the south of the reserve some of which are still working areas. The River Trent borders the reserve and birds can often be seen following the river valley.

Directions

The reserve is situated at Attenborough about 6 miles southwest of Nottingham and reached via the A6005 Nottingham to Long Eaton road. The Visitor Centre is signposted from the A6005 at the Chilwell Retail Park, near The Village Hotel, Macdonalds and The Corn Mill pub.

Access

Pedestrian access at all times. Vehicular access limited to car park opening times.

Parking

The main car park is by the Visitor Centre signposted via Barton Lane from the A6005 at the Chilwell Retail Park between Beeston and Long Eaton. Opening times vary through the year but it is generally open during daylight hours.

Facilities

The Visitor Centre contains a restaurant, shop, conference room and a classroom. There are some interactive activities for children in the Reception area. Educational visits are arranged with local schools. There are various footpaths around the reserve. There is a public hide overlooking the new Year 2000 reedbed and another hide, for which a key can be bought at the Visitor Centre, overlooking the Delta Sanctuary.
