Site Details
Situated southeast of Newport, South Wales off the M4 motorway. Tidal sluices and seawalls of the Severn protect an area of rich farmland and some industrial areas with interlacing footpaths and reens. It contains a large area of unimproved wet grassland. The reserve at the mouth of the River Usk is part of the compensation measures for the flooding of the Cardiff Bay area. Plants such as Thrift, Scurvygrass, Sea Plantain, Common Cordgrass and Sea Aster grow on the wall, whilst the pools and reens are rich in aquatic flora such as Common Reed, Common Pond Reed and Marsh Marigold. Dragonflies and damselflies are numerous in summer. Otter are making a gradual comeback. Water voles are still in decline. The estuary itself is noted for migratory fish such as salmon, sea trout, river lamphrey and eels.

Directions
M4 to Jct 24 Coldra Roundabout, take the A455 and follow signs to Queensway Meadow Industrial Estate. Follow road to Nash. Turn right and follow signs to Sailing Club for Gwent Levels Nature Reserve; stop near entrance to water treatment works. Take paths on left to the pools and river. A footpath goes east towards Saltmarsh Lane scrape and then onto Goldcliff scrape. However to go straight to Saltmarsh Lane you do not turn right to Nash. Instead carry on to Goldcliff and take the first right past the Goldcliff road sign down Saltmarsh Lane. Approximately 0.25 miles up lane on left is the marsh behind hedges. To reach Goldcliff scrape do not turn right at Saltmarsh Lane. Continue through Goldcliff past the Farmers Arms pub on the left. The road bends sharply to the right and approx. 0.25 miles on there is a narrow right turn over a small concrete hump-back bridge. Walk up the bank and view the scrape.Access
There are several access points from the unclassified road that passes through Nash village and Goldcliff. Access is unrestricted.Parking
Parking is limited at Saltmarsh Lane and Goldcliff. The Gwent Levels Nature Reserve has a large layby near the water treatment works.Opening Times
