Site Details
The Moor Green Lakes Nature Reserve occupies 36 hectares (90 acres) north of the River Blackwater and lies in the boroughs of Bracknell Forest and Wokingham, in Berkshire, England. It comprises three lakes: Colebrook North, Colebrook South and Grove Lake. Gravel extraction continues to the west of the Reserve and will extend the reserve considerably over the next 10 years or so. A footpath runs along much of the River Blackwater which is adjacent to the Reserve and the current workings. This provides reasonable, but sometimes distant, views of the lakes and the exposed gravel workings. There are 2 hides on the Reserve providing good views of the lakes.
The Reserve is owned by CEMEX, the quarry operator. The Moor Green Lakes Group helps maintain the Reserve and carries out extensive monitoring and recording of the wildlife on and around the Reserve. The Group website at www.mglg.org.uk gives detailed information about the Reserve and its wildlife. You can join the 500+ members of the Moor Green Lakes Group for just £3 per year which provides the Annual Report and News Letters as well as access to the hides. There are public viewing screens adjacent to the hides for non-members, but if a Member is present, then they will normally provide access for non-members (useful if it is raining!). The website gives information on joining the Moor Green Lakes Group.
