Spurn Point is a long, narrow headland on the northern side of the Humber mouth, terminating at Spurn Head. Spurn has been recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) since 1957, designated as such shortly before the Trust took over the ownership in 1960. The nature reserve has since received further designations including Special Protection Area (SPA), Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and National Nature Reserve in 1996 showing just what a special place this is. There is a café and parking at the Spurn Heritage Coast Visitors Centre in the Old Bluebell at Kilnsea. Useful and up-to-date birding information can normally be had from the Observatory, half a mile south of the Old Bluebell on the road to the point, where there is a small display and books and pamphlets are available. Note that there is NO LONGER ANY ACCESS BY CAR to Spurn Point; the spit has been breached by the sea and there is no intention to restore the road. NB "Spurn" is often used as a catch-all term covering a large area including Kilnsea, Easington, Beacon Ponds, Sammy's Point and the surrounding area, as well as Spurn Point itself. If planning a visit to the area, check also those sites or the list of nearby sites or records. Note that NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED within the NNR.
