Site Details

One of Britain's premier birdwatching sites, this RSPB reserve provides a variety of wetland and coastal habitats and can produce a wide variety of species at any time of year. A public footpath to the beach passes through the centre of the reserve and is open at all times. There are three hides: Fen hide is closest to the visitor centre, then Island hide and then Parrinder hide; there is also a viewing platform on the beach.

Directions

Well signposted off the A149 coast road between Wells-next-the-Sea and Hunstanton, just west of Titchwell village. Thornham Point TF739451&ar=y can be reached by heading three-quarters of a mile west from the end of the public footpath at the beach. For Gypsy Lane, park at TF764436&ar=y and cross the A149 and follow the footpath north to the coast. For Brancaster Golf Course take the minor road off the A149 to the north just before Brancaster and park at TF771451&ar=y.

Access

Public footpath through centre of reserve to beach is open at all times.

Opening Times

Visitor centre during British Summer Time - Monday to Friday 10am-5pm (servery closes 4pm); weekends 9.30am-5.30pm.

Facilities

Extensive: Visitor centre and RSPB shop; several hides; toilets and large car park.

Key Areas / Routes

Walk from car park via visitor centre (check feeders and woodland for finches, warblers etc.) to footpath with reedbeds to right (check middle distance for Marsh Harrier, look and listen for Bearded Tit<) and saltmarsh on left (Short-eared Owl in winter) to left. Continue to main lagoons on right (Avocet and other waders, geese, ducks) with two hides. Beyond the main lagoon on the right is a brackish lagoon (favoured by Spotted Redshank) leading to the beach (waders; divers, grebes and other seabirds offshore). Shorelarks (winter) and Little Tern colony (summer) along beach to right.
