Site Details
RSPB Middleton Lakes was opened in May 2011 after significant work on the former Hanson gravel quarry covering the sites known locally as Drayton Bassett Pits, Fishers Mill and Dosthill Lake. The reserve extends from the northern boundary of Kingsbury Water Park and in Warwickshire straddles the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal and then into Staffordshire the reserve boundary crosses the river to include the large lakes near Dosthill. The reserve includes woodland, grassland, scrub, reedbed and open water plus several shallow pools with margins for waders. A wide variety of species can be found at any time of year and with the creation of two wader scrapes and increased reedbed in 2012 the birding should improve even more so. Regular breeding birds include Cetti's Warbler and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker with wintering owls, harriers and Bittern present most years. Passage birds and rarities have included Broad-billed Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Bufflehead and, more recently, Glossy Ibis, Cattle Egret and White-rumped Sandpiper.

The reserve trails can be accessed from the canal towpath or from the RSPB car park near Middleton Hall. The car park is accessed from Bodymore Heath Road near Aston Villa's training ground, signposted from the A4091.Access
Currently there are few facilities and many paths can be muddy in wet weather. However new paths, screens and a hide are planned for spring 2013. The car park and trails are open from dawn till dusk. The site is prone to flooding from the River Tame and so paths can be closed after severe rainfall.
