- The river Aire, which flows off to the left of this scene, is not navigable because of the weir downstream, the canal is linked with the Aire again on the East side of Knottingley, this forms an "island". A towpath (accessed over the footbridge) follows the canal all the way along, with good river views from the Ferrybridge path.
