Site Details

Headquarters of Staffordshire Wildlife Trust set in 26 acres of former landscape gardens and ancestral home of the Wolseley family. The site has 3 lakes, an area of woodland, a very active feeding station, a brook, newly created areas of wet meadow and borders a stretch of the River Trent.
The centre also hosts a number of large events throughout the year, contact for more details.

Directions

From Stafford: Follow the A513 east past Shugborough until you reach the Wolseley Arms Pub at Wolseley Bridge. Go straight on at the first island, and then immediately left at the second island which turns you into the garden centre. Access to the site is along the driveway on the right next to a small building.
From Rugeley: Follow the A51 west until you reach Wolseley Bridge. At the first island turn right into the garden centre and then turn immediately right into the driveway for the centre next to a small building.
From Stone: Follow the A51 south east until you reach Wolseley Bridge (after Little Haywood). Follow the left hand lane around the first island, and at the second island turn left into the garden centre and then immediately right into the driveway for the centre next to a small building.

Access

Visitor Centre is open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, and at weekends and Bank Holidays 11am-5pm. Gates to the car park are locked at 5:15pm.
Access on foot through a pedestrian gate is permitted at any time of the day whether the centre is open or not.

Parking

Free, but parking meter in the corner to take donations towards maintenance cost of the driveway

Facilities

Visitor Centre with education rooms, toilets, shop and hot drinks machine. Snacks also available. Inside the centre is a LIVE CCTV unit watching the feeding station.
Conference rooms available for hire, contact centre for details.
Most paths are wheelchair accessible. Raised boardwalk encircles one of the lakes and has views over the river. Access to the river meadows is not recommended for wheelchair users.

Key Areas / Routes

Swan Lake: The largest lake in the grounds, with three islands. A picnic area is found on the east shore.
Temple Lake: A long thin medieval fish pond with one island, bordering the woodland.
Stephen's Pond: Small area of open water with marshy terrain surrounding it. Area viewed from raised boardwalk.
Wildlife Garden: Demonstration garden to encourage visitors to make their own gardens more wildlife friendly. A very active feeding station in the garden attracts all common species of garden bird.
Woodland: Small area between Temple Lake and the driveway.
Park Bank: Large grassland area next to the car park which is awash with wildflowers in summer.
River Trent: The section of river bordering the grounds has recently been reprofiled to be more wildlife friendly.
