Site Details

Forming part of the Avalon Marshes, Shapwick Heath offers some of the finest wetland habitat to be found in Europe. This is epitomized by the recent return of Great White Egret as a breeding species to Britain, nesting here in 2012. Bittern and Cetti's Warbler may be found year-round, while spring witnesses a remarkable concentration of staging Hobbies. A long list of vagrants in recent years also demonstrates the huge potential of the site to attract rare and unusual species. The site also plays host to 27 species of butterfly (including White Admiral), and 24 species of mammals, which include Water Vole and Otter.
