Site Details
A former quarry which has now has a large and deep lake with central islands (where wildfowl breed), surrounded by thick shrub layers. It is a rare area of open space in Whitley Bay, so acts as a natural magnet for birds coming in from the nearby (1 mile) North sea, the number of species that can turn up is therefore surprising(including north american warblers!).

A circular path goes round the lake which gives excellent views of the large lake, which often hoasts large numbers of wildfowl (inc. drake Smew recently)and occasional rail species. Feral geese and coots, moorhens, mallards, etc. on the lake are tame and can easily be fed. The path is also boarded by shrubs and small trees, which should be checked for passerines (recently found rarities include yellow-rumped warbler, rustic bunting and common rosefinch) and breeding warblers.Did you know that you can submit photographs to be included in this sites image gallery?
