Site Details

Part of the Lindisfarne NNR that merits special mention. The area is the southern part of the intertidal bay between Holy Island and the mainland. It is the main feeding area for Brent Goose and Wigeon flocks. At low tide green patches of the eel grass Zostera are exposed, an essential food element for both above species. It is best to time your visits an hour or so before high tide when the birds are forced towards the shore. With strong back lighting, pm, is also good particularly if Perigrine or Merlin are around.

Additional Site Details

Directions

Two roads allow access virtually to the foreshore. a. Some 3 miles north of Belford on the A1 clearly sighed to Fenham le Moor. b. Two minor roads near to the Holy Island turn-off, one to Fenhamhill the other to Fenham Granary, join near to the foreshore.

Access

Access is unrestricted whatever the state of the tide, however it is undesirable and dangerous to venture out onto the mudflats. Wildfowling is practised on the Reserve (1/9 to 20/2) and shooters and birdwatchers must co-exist. The area is sensitive as regards rights of way and it is important that you take notice of any posted official restrictions and keep to marked paths.

Parking

Both access points have very limited parking facilities.

Facilities

None. The elevated hide at Fenham Lowmoor Point is not a public hide, it is the property of English Nature and intended primarily for warden's use. This did not appear to be the case on a recent visit - the hide was open with posters etc. clearly aimed at the public.
