Site Details

A chain of disused flooded gravel workings along the River Soar north of Leicester. The complex can be divided into four sections, from north to south: Cossington, Wanlip, Birstall and Watermead. Wanlip consists of a number of lakes such as King Lear's Lake, Waterski Pit, Pec Pit, John Merrick's Lake, Crake Pool, and Wanlip Scrape

Access

Wanlip North GPs which lie north of the A46 between the R.Soar and the Grand Union canal can be viewed from the towpath on the east bank of the canal. Note that most areas north of A46 are strictly private. Access to Wanlip South GPs is off Fillingate: follow signs for 'Watermead Country Park North' from the A46 through Syston to reach the car park at SK606106 and fromthere footpaths cover the whole area.
