Site Details
The National Trust reserve at Newtown is the most important reserve on the Isle of Wight. The estuary has three 'arms' called lakes and a narrow entrance from the sea formed by sand spits. At the western end is Shalfleet Quay; Causeway Lake is the centre arm, and Clamerkin Lake is the eastern inlet. Here lie two woods, Walter's Copse, and Town Copse; also owned by the National Trust. The main habitat is tidal salt marsh; adjoining fields provide roosting space and the woods are home to many other birds.

Directions
Take the A3054 from Newport, turn left by the hospital, or from Yarmouth near the ferry terminal. Lanes are marked from either direction as Newtown, or Newtown Town Hall.Parking
The main car park and visitor centre are near Newtown Town Hall. The lane to Newtown village has limited parking nearer the reserve. The biggest car park is opposite the Old Town Hall.Opening Times
Only the visitor centre and main hide have limited opening times (during the summer months only). Some weekends are covered till October. The reserve is accessible at all times.Facilities
The main hide has two levels; the lower level is accessible to wheelchairs. When unmanned a key can be applied for for personal use. The East hide reached from Town Copse is always open.Key Areas / Routes
The hides give good views over the area. In the centre is a boathouse reached by crossing a causway footbridge. The woods are further along the lane east of the Town Hall; there is a small car park or use the side of the road.Site Photographs
