Site Details
A network of 7 subsidence flashes covering an area of 620 acres, partly SSSI- Scotman's Flash (used for sailing), Pearson's Flash, Westwood Flash, Turner's Flash, Ochre Flash, Bryn Marsh and Horrocks' Flash. The Leigh branch of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal runs through the flashes, providing easy access but the existence of only one footbridge means that routes have to be planned carefully, and parking even more, as some areas are prone to car break-ins.Birding Sites in the Wigan Flashes LNR Area

Access is possible from a variety of points, but probably the best starting point is Wellham Road, at the end of Carr Lane, off Poolstock Lane (B5238) at the lights at St. Jude's RC Church. Poolstock Lane is accessed from the A49 at the Goose Green roundabout, 1km north of the M6 slip road.Access
Not suitable for disabled access away from the canal towpath.Parking
Park by the conspicuous tower of St James with St Thomas Church, Poolstock SD578045, cross the road and walk south along the canal towpath to view the flashes. Please remember this is an urban area and care should be taken to protect both your car and property.Facilities
