Avian Lite 8x28 binocular

Compact binoculars typically have objective lenses measuring 20-25 mm in diameter, whereas those on conventional birding binoculars usually range between 30-50 mm. Avian, with its 8x28 Lites, has occupied the middle ground between the two and developed a fine ‘hybrid’, which has the benefits of the light weight of a compact model, combined with the superior optical performance of a larger binocular.

I took this model for testing to Alexandra Park, a stone’s throw from the Birdwatch office in north London. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they were much more user-friendly than most compact binoculars I have tried before, with the field of view quite reasonable and the eyepieces particularly sturdy, and with twist-up cups that lock into place. When scanning gulls at distance, the image was not as bright as might be expected with a larger-objective binocular, but I had no problem picking out a first-winter Mediterranean Gull a couple of hundred metres away across the reservoir.

The coated lenses give a clear and true image, and are perhaps responsible for its fairly good performance in fading light conditions despite the relatively small objective lenses. The depth of field is reasonable and the close-focus distance of 2.7 m makes this model worthy of consideration for insect enthusiasts. The focusing wheel goes from closest focus to infinity in just 300° – or two moderate turns – which is very good indeed compared with many other binoculars. This was put to good use when switching from a very close view of a Long-tailed Tit in an adjacent tree to watching a fine adult Mediterranean Gull fly in overhead and land on the water.

Aside from the ridged dioptre wheel, the entire casing of the binocular is covered with matt black rubber armouring. This is subtly textured to aid grip on the main body, while the focusing wheel has deep ridges to assist grip when turning. The eyecups are fully covered with smooth rubber armouring. The Avian Lite comes with a fairly sturdy case and a 2.5-cm wide material strap. There are caps for the eyepieces and objective lenses, but no rainguard is included. As well as the 8x28 that I tested, a 10x28 sister model is also available.

The good optical performance of this model, combined with the small stature, sturdy build and light weight, would make it a good choice for children or for those who prefer not to carry a heavy weight around in the field. Since the Avian Lite will fit readily into the average coat pocket, it would also make an ideal extra pair of binoculars, for keeping to hand when you’re not really out birding, but might need some optics in case of emergency!
