Texel Big Day breaks records
The 2018 Texel Big Day, which took place on the famous Dutch island on 12 May, has broken records for funds raised and species seen.
At least €15,760 was raised for House Martin conservation by the 15 participating teams, doubling the amount raised last year; this included Team '3T' breaking the individual fundraising record with €3,257.
Team 'Local Patchers' took the all-important title of race champions, recording an impressive 154 species which was a new big day record for Texel. In total, 182 species were seen across the island, itself an all-time record high for a day count. Rarities seen on the day included a drake King Eider and a singing Iberian Chiffchaff, as well as notable migrants such as European Bee-eater, Red-backed Shrike and Eurasian Dotterel.
